Your support to the PET is Wonderful initiative can help shape the future of medical imaging research and healthcare.

Medical imaging has been instrumental to the diagnosis and treatment of multiple human diseases. PET can be a valuable tool in the management of patients with cancer, neurodegenerative diseases (e.g. Alzheimer’s disease) and cardiovascular diseases (e.g. heart attack).

We work hard to tackle three main barriers that limit widespread use of PET imaging in healthcare: (1) limited access to high-quality PET molecules for quantification of cellular processes in the living body; (2) lack of standardisation of PET imaging techniques; and (3) sub-optimal image analysis methods.

We aim to address these barriers by: (1) developing new molecules for high-quality PET imaging (our radiotracer development programmes); (2) developing, testing and deploying standardised and reproducible methods for PET imaging that can successfully translate from the preclinical research space to the clinical environment (our standardisation programmes); and (3) developing new whole-body and whole-person methodologies for personalised care of patients.

Find out how you can help below:

Advancing knowledge
Support PET discoveries that can drive change in healthcare. Existing programmes include new PET tools for diagnosis and treatment of cancer, cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases.

Creating more opportunities
Support more people achieve their full potential through education. Existing initiatives include online and in-person scientific meetings; and summer scholarship opportunities.

Boosting open science
Support public engagement activities, open lab days, and open science platforms for dissemination of latest PET knowledge. Existing initiatives include The PET is Wonderful Journal.

Enhancing researchers’ experiences
Support transformation of student and staff experiences by improving research culture through visible recognition and reduction of academic precarity. Envisioned activities include student awards and staff bridge funding.

How will you support PET is Wonderful?

All donations to the PET is Wonderful will be processed through the University of Edinburgh Development Trust. The University of Edinburgh Development Trust is a charity registered in Scotland, with registration number SC004307. Donations will be used as described above to:

  • Advance knowledge through support to the PET is Wonderful research team;
  • Create opportunities and boost open science through support to the PET community globally; and
  • Enhance the PET researchers’ experiences in Edinburgh and world-wide.

Reports outlining the activities enabled through charitable donations will be published on the PET is Wonderful webpage.
